Recasting a popular role in Hollywood seems to almost be a weekly thing these days – so when Steven Spielberg tells us that he doesn’t ever see Indiana Jones being recast, we tend to sit up and pay attention.
Speaking with Screen Daily this past week, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, revered as one of the greatest in history, spoke of Indiana Jones future and where he saw the characters future lying after Harrison Ford retired from the iconic character.
Director, Indiana Jones
It’s certainly understandable that the War Horse director feels this way about his beloved character, especially in an environment hellbent on diluting characters will constant cast changes – most recently the drama surrounding Spider-Man.
Many Marvel fans saw Andrew Garfield as the perfect actor to transition the role into the multi-billion dollar Avengers franchise, but saw his time as Peter Parker cut short after only playing character on two occasions.
Perhaps when you have a role as iconic as Indiana Jones and an actor who has defined that role, it’s almost impossible to reboot the franchise with someone else – a dilemma not to dissimilar to Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr. The Oscar-nominated actor has almost become one his superhero character to the point where it wouldn’t work with someone else in the role – when we see Iron Man we see RDJ, and vice-versa.
Only time will tell on Indiana Jones‘ future, especially with recent reports linking Hollywood heavyweight Chris Pratt to the role, but for now we can at least expect another outing for Harrison Ford as the famous archaeologist, not to mention his return to the much loved Star Wars franchise.
